Wow. Can't believe it's been almost a month! School has left me with time for nothing but school. It's ridiculous. They give you more to do in a week than you can do in a week, even if you don't dare do anything but school work. I've been MIA from the family and exhausted. But.... I got to give some shots, insert a foley catheter, help with a wound vac ( sucks all the draining from a huge bedsore and helps it to heal, yuck),give medications, chart in the computer, hang Iv's and the big event of the week, drum role please....dadadadadadadadbing! .......Not just one but 2 stage 4 pressure ulcers. That (if you don't already know, Is a huge, disgusting open wound caused by sitting or laying in the same postion for too long.) This poor guy was in his 60's, paralyzed and had open sores on his bottom that were 3 inches wide and 2 inches deep. You could look inside his bottom and see his bones! It was horrible and oddly fascinating at the same time. The wound nurse ( yes, a nurse who specializes in helping these to heal by packing them with black foam that looked just like my humidifier filter and then hooking the wound vac to it) said it would take about 4 months for the wound to fill in. Amazing. I'm pretty sure those wound nurses are the type that used to like to pop other peoples zits when they were teenagers. That's and odd specialty. Poking and prodding around inside peoples flesh all day. They say it doesn't even hurt the patient because by the time the wound gets that bad, the nerves are shot. They don't even feel it. Fascinating.
